Johnny Gourzong, executive director of Summerfest Productions, in a release noted that he was excited that the 20-something-year-old songstress will be able to bring her flavour to spice up the Festival’s International Night I.
“We are really pleased that we’ve been able to confirm Jazmine for the show. We have been pouring over a list of possible international acts, and she was one of those artistes who really jumped out at us. She’s been having a phenomenal year on the music scene internationally, and some of her songs are even reggae inspired,” said Gourzong.
“We’re looking forward to seeing Jazmine in Montego Bay for Reggae Sumfest. We are gearing up to present an exciting show, a real entertainment explosion starting from the Beach Party on Sunday, and ending with International Night II on Saturday,” he continued.
The festival - which starts with a beach party on Sunday, July 19 and goes into three nights of live performances from Thursday, July 23 to Saturday, July 25 - will also feature rap music luminary Nas and reggae royalty Damian ‘Jnr Gong’ Marley, as well as Bounty Killer, Mavado, Etana, Tarrus Riley, Busy Signal, and a host of other local talents.
Jazmine Sullivan broke on the international scene with the help of rap and hip-hop icon Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliot, and has since enjoyed solid runs on charts, radio stations and concert venues worldwide.
She hit a note with music lovers when she released Bust Your Windows and again struck gold when she followed up with Need You Bad and Lions, Tigers and Bears.
Come Friday, July 25, she’ll add the Reggae Sumfest stage to her growing list of worldwide performances. Summerfest Productions will take over Montego Bay from July 19-25.
Scatta makes Tiki his priority

Magnum Queen of the Dancehall, Tiki, is at the forefront of producer Scatta’s new captivating ‘Hindu’ rhythm.
Scatta said the female deejay, who is signed to his label Outaroad Records, did a song called Tiki Wine on the rhythm.
“She is signed to my label so at the moment, I am making her a priority of any venture that I am doing,” Scatta told THE STAR.
“She record it (the song) like that. The song drop in at the ideal time and she have the little wining thing going,” he said.
Tiki says she is currently endorsing her song Tiki Wine. She said she had enjoyed working on the rhythm and it complemented her song.
general idea
Scatta said the rhythm was created about three weeks ago by him, his engineer, Shady, and his friend, Purple, who is from India. Scatta said he had the general idea of the type of rhythm that he wanted to do, but Purple provided the Indian flavour. With Jamaican and Indian expertise, the ‘Hindu’ rhythm was finished in one hour on a Sunday afternoon.
But there are other contestants who entered the Magnum Kings and Queens of the Dancehall competition, who are on the rhythm. Rage did Hindu while Tanto Blacks did Ticklish.
In reference to Tanto Blacks’ song, Scatta said: “It fit the rhythm like a glove, so we hope him get the justice ’cause is really a humble youth.”
There are other established artistes on the rhythm, like Degree and Elephant Man. Scatta said Elephant Man did not hesitate to voice his Belly Dance song on the rhythm as he got Billboard success from Scatta’s ‘Coolie Dance’ rhythm with his song Jook Gal.

Tiki
But Scatta said he would not be focusing on recording the big artistes just yet.
“I don’t record many big artistes on it yet ’cause I want the young artistes to get some glory off it first. And me really want to try with a female now,” Scatta told THE STAR.
In the coming weeks, he will be recording with other top artistes. And he plans to keep on recording new songs on it so that the rhythm will have longevity.
In the meantime, Scatta says the rhythm has been getting some level of airplay. In a few weeks, he also plans to do other promotional work on the rhythm overseas.
As for Tiki, Scatta said the video shoot of her song No Gal Nuh Hotter Than Me was scheduled to begin on Monday. Tiki is also booked for a show in Canada on June 23.
Mr. Vegas Counts His Blessings

What exactly prompted last year’s decision might not be entirely clear to some. Still what matters is the ‘now’. And right now, he has no plans of disappearing from an industry that has earned him much acclaim.
Vegas has been described as an artiste with an ‘uncanny knack of making hits.’ Truth be told, in recent years, he has had huge success with most of his released singles.
Dancehall, like much of Jamaica’s other music has often borrowed from church. This is evidenced by the current surge of praise music reminiscent of Sunday school times. Of course, as dancehall lives out this current phase, it is Vegas who leads the charge. In addition to having the #1 song on the UK Reggae chart, he has also topped the Caribbean Hot 30 Countdown with the inescapable single ‘I Am Blessed’.
The single is his most recent chart topper, following 2008’s ‘Daggering’ and ‘Mus Come a Road’ which entered Germany’s Black Singles chart. The former release helped to mark that year with a bit of flack, on the still controversial subject. With ‘Mus Come A Road’ however, he played it ’safer’ and stylistically the track was a clear ode to dancehall great Tenor Saw.
It’s been a full 12 years since his entry into the music world. He emerged on the scene with Nike Air, his next single, “Heads High”, had a successful chart run in the UK and a #69 peak on the Billboard R & B chart. By 1998, his debut album, Heads High, was released, which hit #5 on the US Reggae chart. Vegas won a MOBO for Best Reggae Artist for the Heads High album as well. 2000’s single “Hot Gal Today” was a minor hit on the US R&B charts, peaking at #66.
After the release of his 2001 album Damn Right, other minor hits followed. The album affirmed itself with a #2 spot on the US Reggae chart. By 2004, it came time for the Pull Up LP, though a hit in Jamaica, the title track only managed a peak of #98 on Billboard Top 200, (as well as #68 on the R&B chart).
He proceeded into 2007 with his mega hit Tek Weh Yuself song, which gave the soundtrack for the now standard Jamaican expression for avoiding danger. The fervour had quickly spread over seas and Tek Weh Yuself, on the Dutch Pot riddim was named as one of the top 50 songs of the year by Vibe magazine.
Currently, he is looking forward with a revamped management team, headed by Ray Alexander of Khool. Vegas was formerly managed by sound clash mavens, Irish and Chin. As his musical career gathers momentum, the singjay is giving full focus to a Summer tour and the completion of his new album.

Diana King, The Wait Is Over

After being discovered on the cabaret circuit, King flew to greener pastures as a part on Shabba Rank’s tour line up. Eventually, her solo work began to garner the attention of local and overseas industry producers who sought to put their own creative stamp on the iconic singer. In the 1990, she signed with Sony Music’s Work Group. The collaboration spawned the release of two albums; Tougher Than Love and Think Like a Girl which included her ‘Treat Her Like a Lady’ collaboration with Celine Dion. Both albums significantly helped her to crack the international market.
She scored a string of hits on the US Billboard Dance, pop, R&B and European charts. They include remakes of Ain’t Nobody, Stir it Up, Say a Little Prayer (featured on My Best Friend’s Wedding soundtrack). Her fans delighted in the singles ‘Love Triangle’ and ‘L-L-Lies’. Still, nothing says Diana King like her gold-selling Shy Guy, which camped out in the number one spot on several charts across Europe.
By 2000 she managed to catch Madonna’s attention. The pop queen subsequently signed Diana to her Maverick label and released the album Respect in 2002. Not much was heard of Diana King in the North American market since then, but she has been a long standing favourite of Asian music fans.
One place where she was very much missing in action was Jamaica and in 2007 she appeared at the staging of Reggae Sumfest. Within that time also, King managed to offer fans a long overdue single ‘Spanish Town Blues’. Her foray with the local charts was short lived and not much has been heard or seen of the artiste until now.
Although she has returned with a new single ‘Yu Dun Know’ Diana King’s immediate focus is not cutting an album of new material. Once again, she has signed with a major record label, for which she is working on an album of covers for Warner Music, Japanese. “The album is being done exclusively for the Asian market. It should be released around summer,” King recently stated. UK pop star James Blunt’s global smash You’re Beautiful is said to be among the covers that will be included on the album.
After Asia receives her album of covers, other fans of her music can expect new material following the impending this Warner release.
50 Cent In Crossfire
50 Cent has signed on to upcoming police drama movie ‘Caught in the Crossfire’.
The hip hop star - real name Curtis Jackson - is due to appear on the big screen alongside Adam Rodriguez, Chris Klein and Richard T Jones in the forthcoming action-packed film.
‘Caught in the Crossfire’ - which was written and will be directed by little-known filmmaker Brian Miller - will see two homicide detectives caught in the middle of gang problems, corrupt police officers and copious amounts of violence.
The rapper will play a gang member who is forced, reluctantly, to become an informer for the police.
The project will be co-funded through 50 Cent’s Cheetah Vision company and filming is already underway in Grand Falls, Michigan in the US.
Eminem Speaks Out About MTV Movie Mishap
We all thought that Sacha Baron Cohen had really narked off Eminem at Sunday’s MTV Movie awards after he landed on the rappers face during a semi-naked stunt… but it seems the rapper was in on the act all the time.
The real Slim Shady has revealed that he scripted and rehearsed the outrageous stunt at Sunday’s award show, which left the rapper’s face buried in the funnyman’s crotch.
Audience members and TV viewers were left stunned when Baron Cohen, in character as gay fashionista Bruno and dressed as a giant dove, fell from the roof of the Universal Ampitheater onto Eminem’s lap.
The rapper was heard angrily protesting before storming out of the show, accompanied by his entourage, and in the aftermath, the incident provoked furious debate about whether the incident was staged or planned behind Eminem’s back.
On Monday, Paris Hilton insisted Eminem knew nothing about it and his response was real - but now MTV’s head writer has come forward to confess the star was in on it all along.
Scott Aukerman writes on his blog, “Yes, the Eminem-Bruno incident was staged. They rehearsed it at dress (rehearsal) and yes, it went as far as it did on the live show.

Marion ‘Suge’ Knight Faces Lawsuit
Today 11:00
Marion ‘Suge’ Knight will face a lawsuit if he continues with plans to call his music label Blackball Records - the owners of a company with the same name are threatening him with legal action.
Knight co-founded Death Row Records in 1991 but lost the rights to the label’s assets after declaring bankruptcy in 2006. The company was subsequently sold off and Knight started a new label - reportedly using the Blackball name since 2008.
But the owners of another Blackball Records, a San Fransisco, California-based firm, have issued a cease and desist letter to Knight, warning him to drop the name or face a showdown in court.
Knight claims to have filed for the copyright in 2006, but dropped it earlier this year, while officials at Blackball Records claim to have held the trademark since 2002.

Brandy Reaches Car Crash Settlement
Today 11:00
R&B star Brandy has agreed to pay the two children of the woman killed in her 2006 car crash $300,000 (£200,000) each in compensation.
Awatef Aboudihaj died after her car collided with Brandy’s Range Rover in Los Angeles three years ago. The singer avoided criminal charges, but was sued by Aboudihaj’s widower Marouane Hdidou and their two kids.
Brandy agreed to pay the children a total of $600,000 (£400,000) in court documents filed in L.A. on Tuesday, but the nightmare isn’t over for Brandy yet - she has yet to reach an agreement with Hdidou, who rejected his part of a $1.2 million (£800,000) settlement back in February, despite his attorney’s pleas to take the money. That case continues.
I imagine more money would help, ‘ease his suffering…’ right?
