SPANNER BANNER

Joseph Anthony Bonner popularly known as Spanner Banner was born in Rock Hall, St. Andrew. He is the eighth of eleven children for his mother Violet Bonner. He grew up in Rock Hall St Andrew with his parents and siblings, several of whom are also musically inclined. He is a member of the talented Bonner brothers which includes Pliers (of Chaka Demus & Pliers fame), Richie Spice and Snatcha. While growing up music was always a part of his life, the music of such greats as Bob Marley, Jacob Miller & Gregory Issacs were the sound track to his childhood days.

Spanner Banner confirmed his musical intentions at a tender age when he sang at an event in his community and received great responses from the audience. Hence his decision to pursue a career in music was not a very difficult choice. He recorded his very first single Life Goes On, while still in his teens in 1988 for legendary Jamaican record producer, Winston Riley. This song dominated reggae charts locally and internationally placing the name Spanner Banner on the lips of music lovers worldwide. He proved that this was no fluke by quickly reeling out successive hit songs such as, Live & Learn, Michelle & Tease Me which reached top of the British pop charts in the 1990s after it was re-recorded by Chaka Demus & Pliers.

This new found success opened up many doors for Spanner Banner in the music biz and pretty soon he was being sought to record for several other topflight producers such as King Jammys, Donovan Germaine, Bobby Digital and Philip Burrell. In 1993 Spanner Banner signed a contract with Island Records and collaborated with famed Jamaican record musicians/producers Sly & Robby to record an album titled Chill for Island. This album cemented his reputation as a as a top class reggae singer both locally and internationally. It spawned several hit singles such as Cheater, Universal Love, You Gotta Be, What We Need is Love & the title track Chill. Spanner Banner supported the release of Chill with successful tours of Europe, The United States, Africa and Great Britain this resulted in a great amount of international exposure for him.

In 1997, Spanner Banner started his own label Sweet Angel Productions and showcased his production skills on his Lovers Story album. This album spawned hits such as Ladies Night (featuring Sean Paul) & Tears In The Rain. His subsequent album Real Love was released by Heart Beat Records in 2001 to much acclaim overseas. Twin Brothers Records later released his next album titled Spanner Banner’s Greatest Hits in 2002, which covered over a decade of his past hits and included new songs as well. He has also recorded albums for several top class producers such as King Jammys and Clive Hunt.

In 2001 Spanner Banner moved to live in England where worked mainly as a song-writer for the Indian girl group Freedom Angels. While in the UK he also did several recording projects, as well as performances in the UK & Europe. One of his most notable projects while in England was a remix of his cover of Kool & The Gang’s Ladies Night which also featured Sean Paul. The remix featured Spanner Banner, Sean Paul & Kool & The Gang for the legendary American group’s tribute album.

Spanner Banner returned to Jamaica in 2004 and began to work with Fifth Element Records. During his stint with Fifth Element he did extensive tours of the United States as well as shows throughout the Caribbean with Richie Spice and the Fifth Element family. On the local scene he performed at major events including Reggae Sumfest, East Fest, Rebel Salute, All Spice Culture in the Hills and St. Mary Mi Come From.

After nearly two decades Spanner Banner’s music is still as potent as when he stormed onto the scene in 1998. His recently released full length project I’m A Winner, is proof of this as it is laden with musical gems such as Rolling Stones, Solid As A Rock, One Love, She Groove Me & the title track I’m A Winner. The album was produced by his management and production company Bonner Cornerstone Music, along with producers such as Don Carleone, Donovan Germaine, Kemar ‘Flava’ McGregor & Revolutionary Entertainment. The album is being distributed by Bonner Corner Stone music, VP Records, Zojak Worldwide and Tads Records International.

Eminem

Jay-Z Shocked By Eminem’s Bulletproof Vest

Hip-hop superstar Jay-Z was shocked to discover his friend Eminem wears a bulletproof vest - insisting he feels sorry for the rapper because there is a “dark cloud” hanging over him.

Jay-Z teamed up with Eminem in the studio in 2003, a year after the Stan hitmaker released his highly-acclaimed record The Eminem Show.

The Big Pimpin’ star admits he felt body armour under his pal’s clotheswhen he gave him a hug - and he realised the extent of Eminem’s problems.

He tells Interview magazine, “I never even told him this, but I remember that Eminem came into the studio when we made Moment of Clarity, which he produced, on The Black Album. So here’s Eminem. It’s 2003, he was, like, the biggest rapper in the world - he sold, like, 20 million records worldwide or some ridiculous number.

It’s 2003, he was, like, the biggest rapper in the world - he sold, like, 20 million records worldwide or some ridiculous number

“But when he came to the studio, I remember I hugged him and I could feel that he had on a bulletproof vest. I couldn’t imagine being that successful. I mean, he’s a guy who loves rap and wanted to be successful his whole career.

Then he finally gets it, and there’s this dark cloud over him. He has to be afraid to walk around New York freely. I was like, ‘Here it is.

You’ve gotten everything you wanted, and now you’re a prisoner of your own fame.’ That’s sad to me - that you have to walk around in a bulletproof vest after you’ve sold 20 million records. I found it sad”.

Fugees

Fugees Consider Reunion to Benefit Haiti

Rapper Pras is considering reuniting the Fugees for a special benefit concert to raise money for earthquake-devastated Haiti. The star - who has Haitian roots - previously poured scorn on the chances of the Killing Me Softly hitmakers getting back together, insisting the group was “straight dead.”

That’s the only reason I would think about doing anything on that level.

But he’s hoping to convince ex-bandmates Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill to put aside their differences for the one-off show in aid of those affected by the massive tremor.

He says, “That’s the only reason I would think about doing anything on that level.”Pras has also criticised the government officials in the poverty-stricken country for failing to take precautions before the disaster struck. He tells Yo! Raps, “There’s no communication down there. My mother told me this morning that she still has her mother’s brothers and sister, who I’ve never met, who are still down in Haiti.”This is definitely the worst and that’s why the donations are cool, the relief aid is immediate short term, but the nation’s government has to be held accountable for not using the hundreds of millions it has received in aid over the years to build up the poor infrastructure and crumbling hospitals to treat the many wounded and gravely injured.”

In Exclusive Interview, R&B Singer Apologizes, Says Still Has ‘Love For’ Rihanna

By SHEILA MARIKAR and LUCHINA FISHER

chris-brown-sad-face.jpgR&B singer Chris Brown apologized and said he is still hurting inside from the night he assaulted his former girlfriend, Rihanna, nearly 11 months ago.

“I never ever had problems with anger. No, no domestic violence with any of my past girlfriends,” Brown said. “I never was that kind of person…I look at it, and it’s really, like really difficult. It’s like, ‘How could I be that person?’”

Brown speaks candidly about his relationship with ex-girlfriend Rihanna in an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts.

Although some people have doubted his sincerity, Brown told Roberts he understands the severity of the incident and said he still has “love for” Rihanna.

“I think what it is when people see me smiling and kind of nonchalantly getting answers or, or saying things. It’s — I’m human, really, I’m like really hurting inside,” he said. “And it really kind of like is devastating to me.”

Brown also reacted to Rihanna’s comments from her exclusive interview with ABC New’s Diane Sawyer, when the pop star broke her silence about the night Brown beat her.

“He had no — no soul in his eyes. Just blank. So, at that point, I just didn’t know what could happen. … There was no person when I looked at him. … It wasn’t the same person that says, ‘I love you,’” she said in the “20/20″ interview.

“I was wrong for what I did,” Brown told Roberts. “And I would definitely say that it’s not something that I look past or look over. Something that’s really, really touchy. And, and like I said, I’m — I’m really sorry for — for what went down. And what happened.”

G Whizz Management felt cheated by Supreme Ventures - Super Lotto

By J Tymz
OutAroad.com Writer

gwhizz-mossimo.jpgEarly this morning OutAroad.com received a statement via email from G Whizz’s manager Mossimo who seems to be upset with Supreme Ventures for not living up to their verbal agreement. OutAroad.com gets to understand that Supreme Ventures went ahead and flip the script from My Life Soon Sort Out to My Life Soon Set.

Below is the statement from Mossimo G Whizz’s Manager

Around November 5, 2009 we received a phone call from an Agent of Supreme Ventures stating that they are interesting in using a portion of “My Life Soon Sort Out” a song that was written by G Whizz and produced by TJ records for their advertising campaign that started on November 9, 2009. According to the contract, the advertising campaign is for a period of one year and the amount the agent wants to pay G Whizz was $350,000.00 Jamaican dollars to amend the song to fit Supreme Ventures purpose for all advertising medium and to represent the company.

We believed that Supreme Ventures and Super Lotto is operating in seven (7) English Caribbean speaking Countries and when we look at the original contract sent to us, there wouldn’t be any boundaries that the song would have had. However, I continued to negotiate on the artiste’s behalf made an offer with the Agent for $600,000.00 and with a separate agreement for performance, etc. To our surprise, Supreme Ventures with its Super Lotto game started the advertising campaign with a similar phase called “my life soon set”.

The song “my life soon sort out” is a very popular song in Jamaica and now across the Caribbean and the world, when people hear “my life soon set”, they would know that it is a mimic of “My life soon sort out” by G Whizz.

G Whizz is disappointed in the manner in which they go about business as he was looking forward in working with Supreme Ventures through its Agent. In fact, G Whizz and his management team believed that the way in which Supreme Ventures and its Agent concluded his negotiation was a mere replica of the method in which colonial masters used to exploit the poor. “G Whizz has being working so hard over the years to help his family and I will not allow anyone to exploit his creativity for nothing, G Whizz would rather to collect the money and then give it to charity. It is not all about the money but for god sake, he needs to eat too. “G Whizz is ready to work with corporate Jamaica at any time.

Supreme Ventures should pull the mimic ad for the super lotto that they are now running and come back to the table for the real song, “my life soon sort out”

Flippa Mafia gives back to Trench Town High

flippa-mafia-outaroad.jpg
It’s the Christmas season, and while some may refer to it as the ’silly season’, it is also the time to spread joy and goodwill and that’s exactly what the Flossing King, Flippa Mafia plans to do.

Flippa, who says he is really a philanthropist at heart, will be channeling his energy into a school fete for the Trench Town High School.

“As entertainers it is our duty to give back … and if you really check it a lot of us donate to worthy causes. The public may not hear about it, but that’s because we don’t like to pose up for picture and send it to newspaper every time we do what we are supposed to do by helping the less fortunate,” Flippa said.

Flippa was full of praise for the artistes who participate in the various high school tours, which see artistes in performance at various schools across the island and emphasising positive messages.

“We have to get the youths to understand the importance of an education and staying in school. We need the school-girls to erase the idea of teenage pregnancy and replace it with total focus on their school work. Education must always come first,” he declared passionately.

The fete takes place on December 12 and all proceeds will go towards the Trench Town High School.
