Terry Linen’s turning point

Terry Linen’s turning point

Despite having had successes in the past and subsequently building on them in the present, singer Terry Linen still possesses that elusiveness about him which translates into his music. Hopefully, this just-released CD, which proclaims to all and sundry that he is A Better Man, will be the bridge over any troubled waters.

Terry Linen’s album cover

With three big tunes in 2008, all of which had the potential to be mega hits for the singer, it was only natural that a CD would be in the making for this act doing a comeback in a year when there was a yawning space for a singer of this calibre.

Terry Linen’s No Time To Linger, Mood For Love and the title track for the CD A Better Man, struck a responsive chord with fans, made their way on charts locally and overseas and heralded the return of Kiplin ‘Terry Linen’ Simpson. Well produced and utilising the creative writing talents of Fitz ‘Favourite’ Livermore, these singles passed the musical litmus test, and fortunately, the rest of songs on the CD have basically stuck to the formula.

A 16-track compilation, with a ‘bonus track’, Couldn’t Be The Girl For Me, A Better Man explores love - lost and otherwise - fidelity and spirituality. Perhaps the only discordant note is track 16, It Hurt Dem, which gives a too-loud voice to detractors on a CD which is otherwise chock-full of positivity.

Worthy of note is the fact that the large majority of the songs are all original tracks, many of which can stand on their own rather than fit into the mould ‘filler’.

Linen does a rather haunting remake of the Might Diamonds classic Have Mercy on which he further slows the tempo and plays around with his vocals. On this track, he steps a bit out of his comfort zone and it is this (of course, one can hardly go wrong with a Mighty Diamond song) that makes it such a good listen. The CD would have had a better flavour had he challenged himself a bit more on other songs

In addition to the ‘big three’ listed above, which appear on the CD as tracks number 1 (No Time To Linger), number three (A Better Man) and number five (Mood For Love), Now one See The Sun, track number four, and number seven At Least/Back To Atlanta have that first-listen appeal.

Although he has matured, his voice still possesses that Garnet Silk sound, and this is especially evident on track number 16, Praise Ye The Lord.

Among the musicians who worked on this project are Dean ‘Canon’ Fraser, Robbie Lyn, Fabian ‘Fish’ Smith, Daniel ‘Axeman’ Thompson, Joslyn

‘Speckle’ McKenzie, Leroy ‘Mafia’ Heywood and Denver Smith

Taking production credits are Clive Hunt, Sidney Mills, Dean Fraser, Damion Allen, Fitz Livermore and Upliftng Music.

Executive producers are Tad A Dawkins Senior and Junior and the CD is distributed by Tad’s Records.

Dancehall artiste Assassin is certainly more mature and has even developed into ‘Agent Sasco’.

The artiste, whose real name is Jeffrey Campbell, said Agent Sasco is a “more spiritually aware, socially conscious” version of himself.

“It’s just a new branch to the whole brand. As I get more mature I try to focus on music that is not only geared at entertainment,” Assassin told THE STAR.

“Agent Sasco is a mission and a movement that is giving people music that they can relate to, give them thought, create more social awareness and encourage people to think more,” he said.

Assassin said he started the Agent Sasco movement with songs like Same Thing Again and Give Thanks. His other straight dancehall songs like Pree Dis and Almighty Protect Me, he said, he will leave to the interpretation of his listeners.

“Sometimes you put songs out and people find deeper meaning in them,” he told THE STAR.

alter ego

While the Agent Sasco persona will release more socially aware songs, Assassin said it is not an alter ego.

“It may be similar but not entirely an alter ego ’cause that is usually outside your normal character. This has always been a part of my work

, I’m just fine-tuning it now,” Assassin said.

His new CD, Assassin Agent Sasco Dancehall Mixtape, was recently released and another onedrop CD is currently being manufactured for distribution soon. He also has new songs like Stimulus Package and Guinep Stain which are doing well.

Assassin, who is currently in the United States, will return to Jamaica on Wednesday after shows in Atlanta and Los Angeles. In June, he will have shows in the US Virgin Islands

and The Bahamas.

T.I.T.I.’s Prison Appeal Turned Down

Rapper T.I. will report to prison on Tuesday (26May09) to begin his year-long sentence as scheduled - his request to have the date pushed back has been denied.

The Live Your Life hitmaker is due to turn himself in to authorities by noon on 26 May (09) to begin a 366-day jail term, which he was handed in March (09) following his 2007 arrest for illegal weapons possession.

There is nothing more we can do. We think he was scored the wrong way.

The hip-hop star - real name Clifford Harris, Jr. - filed papers on Thursday (21May09) asking to have the sentence delayed by ten days to give him more time to secure a cell in a minimum-security prison near his home in Atlanta, Georgia.

But on Friday afternoon (22May09) U.S. District Judge Charles A. Pannell Jr. ruled T.I. must report to authorities in Forrest City, Arkansas on Tuesday as planned.

T.I.’s lawyer Donald F. Samuel tells AllHipHop.com, “There is nothing more we can do. We think he was scored the wrong way.”

Many in the packed crowd of about 16,000 people held up encouraging signs, like one reading “T.I. We Will Miss U!”

He must report by noon Tuesday to the Federal Correction Institution at Forrest City, Ark. He was arrested after prosecutors said he tried to buy unregistered machine guns and silencers from undercover federal agents in 2007.

During the concert, T.I. said he hoped that everyone learned from his mistakes. He brought his five children on stage, often holding one of them while he performed “No Matter What” — a single off the almost double-platinum album “Paper Trail.”

Snoop Dogg To Drop Reggae Album

Posted by riddimja

Reinventing yourself is the only way to stay on top in this game.

You have to try new things and show different sides of yourself or else the people will get bored.

It seems like no one understands this better than West Coast repper Snoop Dogg.

He has never been afraid to try new sounds and styles and usually the people eat it up. I mean think about it, what other artist can go from “Murder Was The Case” to “Sensual Seduction” and nobody even blink an eye?

just when you thought we had seen it all from the man, word is coming from the Dogg’s house that he is about to flip the game again.

Fresh off his country debut I am now hearing that Snoop is about to release an all reggae album!

Apparently Snoop has been laying down several tracks with members of the Marley family in his home studio in L.A. and is really intent on releasing an all reggae album. So far I hear his record label is not with it at all but Snoop doesn’t give a damn and continues to make new tracks.

I must admit this isn’t too surprising to me. I mean if I had to guess any genre that Snoop would venture into, Reggae would be at the top of the list. The country thing was a stretch but hey, can’t knock a man for trying I guess right.

I wonder if he’s gonna dread the perm up now?

Spanner Banner Says ‘I’m A Winner’

He’s no stranger to reggae music and in his time he has fleshed out a couple hits. As one of the most iconic pieces of music from his young days, he released the chart smashing ‘Life Goes On’ taking local and international radio by storm in the 90’s. With momentum he soared to the top of the British charts with tracks like ‘Live and Learn’, ‘Michelle’, and ‘Tease me’. A subsequent revisit of ‘Tease Me’ came from Chaka Demus and Pliers not long after.

For the artist born Joseph Bonner and popularly known as Spanner Banner, music forms the bloodline. His siblings are Richie Spice and Pliers of the famed Chaka Demus and Pliers duo.

After being signed to Island Records, he worked on the release of his ‘Chill’ debut. The album was produced by Sly & Robbie, and mark his officially entry into even larger reggae arenas. Hits on that album included ‘What We Need Is Love’, ‘You Gotta Be’, ‘Universal Love’ and ‘Cheater’.

Since his departure from Island records in 1996, many projects have followed. Chief of which was the launch of his recording label, ‘Sweet Angel Productions’. With one of the of the most distinctive voices in the business, it might definitely be hard work for Spanner Banner to even become obscure. While working on a series of fruitful artist and label collaborations, Banner still found time to reach the masses in places like Europe Africa and North America. He took the decision to relocate to the UK, still recording and touring.

It is no secret that his brother Richie Spice is one to burn up the chart from time to time. A return to Jamaica proved the best thing for Spanner Banner and he quickly worked on projects with his brother as well as other past members of the famed Fifth Element label.

Soon, is the only time given for his well anticipated album. The set features some of Jamaica’s finest producers. The forthcoming work includes songs like ‘One Love’ (on the Heavenly riddim) a Don Corleon production, ‘Angels Around Me’ produced by No Doubt Records, and ‘Best Friends’ produced by Bonner Cornerstone Music.

Right now Spanner Banner is looking forward. 2009 will see a lot of new, different and definitely great things from the artist. Already he has proven that with this his ’second coming’ he can still belt out a dancehall classic as well as a reggae ballad. Fans old and new can try on his current single ‘Rolling Stones’ on the Automatic riiddim, produced by legendary Penthouse Records for size.

By Basil Walters, Observer staff reporter

Ace deejay, Buju Banton whose utterances at the recent launch of his latest album Rasta Got Soul, created a raging controversy, is working on his first book, scheduled to hit the stands later this year.

It will be a coffee-table book called Buju Banton Live. The upcoming book will be in no way as provocative as the Gargamel’s assertion to the effect that the world’s fixation on Bob Marley is hurting the growth of reggae music.

“We have a book coming scheduled for a fall release entitled Buju Banton Live, and it is a coffee-table book,” revealed the president of Gargamel Music Inc, Tracii McGregor. “It consists of live photographs with Buju Banton performing over the last three or four years. A coffee-table book is a larger formated book that essentially you don’t necessarily put it on your bookshelf, you put it on your coffee table so that when folks they come over and visit you, they got something to look at, browse through,” explained McGregor.

She said the book, which will be published by Buju Banton’s recording company Gargamel Music, is being designed by top designer and director for Esquire Magazine, Dale Crooks with photographs provided by internationally renowned photographer Jonathan Mannion.

“We worked with an amazing photographer Jonathan Mannion…. he is a huge fan of Buju Banton. He and Buju really got a great rapport,” McGregor told the Observer. “We spent a lot of time with Jonathan. We used his images for (the albums) Too Bad as well as Rasta Got Soul,” she added.

She stated that over the last four years Mannion has shot Buju live extensively. “The photographer captured the artiste’s performances in such a way that anyone who is a Buju fan would want to have. It is a bit more tangible than a T-shirt. He is an intense performer and these images really captured in first-class way this world-class performer. And it is being designed by a famed designer, Dale Crooks, who has designed all of Gargamel’s artwork. packaging. everything from day one.”

McGregor said the album, Rasta Got Soul, which was released to coincide with the 43rd anniversary of Haile Selassie I’s three-day state visit to Jamaica in 1966, is already enjoying tremendous response. “The responses are really phenomenal. People always say you never know what to really expect next from him (Buju Banton), and they never really saw this coming,” she chuckled.

Snellville Man Charged With Killing Atlanta Rapper

Up-and-coming Atlanta rapper Dolla was killed in a shooting at an upscale shopping mall, and a man was arrested for investigation of murder, police said Tuesday. Los Angeles County Coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter said the man killed Monday afternoon at the Beverly Center was 21-year-old Roderick Anthony Burton II, the birth name of rapper Dolla. Police said in a statement Tuesday that Aubrey Louis Berry, 23 of Snellville was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport with a gun Monday night. His bail was set at $1 million. Burton was shot several times in a parking structure at the Beverly Center, and was later declared dead at a hospital, police said. Burton’s publicist, Sue Vannasing, told the Los Angeles Times that the rapper was waiting at a valet stand after a shopping trip when he was shot. Police said Berry was found hours later in a ticketing area of Los Angeles International Airport. He was believed to have dropped off a rental car before he was found, said airport police Sgt. Jim Holcomb. “As the officers approached the suspect, they asked him ‘Do you know why we’re here?”‘ Holcomb told The Associated Press. “He put his (hands) up in the air and said, ‘Yes, I’ve got a gun in my waistband. Don’t shoot me.”‘ Airport police recovered a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun and turned Berry over to Los Angeles police. Burton, a protege of hip-hop artist Akon, worked on the soundtrack for the 2006 dance film “Step Up” and recently released two singles with Akon: “Like This” and “She So Fine.” His MySpace page said he once modeled for Diddy’s Sean John clothing line and was signed to Jive and Elektra record labels. A media contact listed on the MySpace page did not immediately return an e-mail seeking comment. Burton was working on his second album, “A Dolla and a Dream,” which was due to be released on Akon’s Konvict Muzik label. A song with T-Pain was titled “Who in the (Expletive) Is That?” On one of his songs, “Rainy Nights,” Burton seemed to foreshadow his own death: “Papa died at 25 so he must have been great, they say the good die young, I guess I’m on my way.”
