Vybz Kartel wins DJ of the Year titles again

Image

The Gaza just rolls on and on and on. Vybz Kartel walked away with the DJ of the Year title at the annual EMEs for the second consecutive year, adding an exclamation mark to an incredible 12 month run that included eight number one singles, as well as a Billboard R & B chart hit, and oodles of controversy. The deejay also copped the Recording Artiste of the Year title as well as the songwriter/lyricist of the year titles this year.

It was a great night for the Portmore Empire as Jahvinci shared the Breakthrough Artiste of the Year trophy with Chino, and Merital Family laughed all the way to the bank as they won the Duo/Group of the year award based on the strength of their ultra-popular My Money Ha Ha single.

Spanner Banner Wins EME Award for Biggest Comeback Artist of the Year

Reggae star Spanner Banner has been working hard to regain his former status in the local music industry since he returned to Jamaica a few years ago. The prolific hit maker was residing in the UK for over three years hence his absence from the local music scene in the earlier part of this decade. Despite all the obstacles he has faced in his bid to achieve this goal, Spanner Banner has stepped back into the local spotlight wit his recent number one hit single Rolling Stones.

His return to the local musical landscape has found favor with fans and music industry insiders alike. Therefore it comes as no surprised that he has copped the award for Biggest Come Back Artist of the Year in the Excellence in Music and Entertainment Awards (EMEs) which was held last night at The Gardens at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston.

When contacted Spanner Banner was in a very happy mood as he expressed his gratitude to the fans who voted for him on the EMEs website; “Right now I man haffi big up all the fans who vote for me, them and Jah made it possible and I give thanks to them and the creator who give I the inspiration to write and sing good music.”

Spanner Banner was also one of the performers at the EMEs. He and his three musical siblings Pliers, Richie Spice and Snatcha gave patrons attending the event an extra special performance that was dubbed the Bonner Brothers Moment.

julianmarley.jpgJulian Marley Brought Marley Magic To Negril One Love Reggae Concert

Two days after his brothers Stephen and Ziggy picked up Grammy Awards in the Best Reggae Album and the Best Children’s album category respectively, Julian Marley played to a full house at the Negril Escape Resort at Negril One Love Reggae Concert show which was held on Tuesday February 2, 2010. It was Marley Magic all the way as Julian Marley rocked the house in fine style.

His nearly two hour long performance saw him reeling of songs such as Father’s Plce, Harder Dayz, Boom Draw, Awake, Lion In The Morning and Loving Clear along with several of his father’s timeless hits. The huge audience sang along, screamed and applauded right throughout his performance.

The show was opened by Ras Noble, Power Drill and Iron Head all these acts gave a good account of themselves.

The next show in the Negril One Love Reggae Concert winter series will feature veteran lovers rock singer John Holt along with Richie Melody and the Uprizing Band.

Timmi Burrell Impresses at the EME Awards

Rising reggae/dancehall artist Timmi Burrell was in fine form when he performed at the Excellence in Music and Entertainment Awards (EMEs), which was held on the 4th of February 2010 at The Gardens at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston. The dapperly dressed young man was the first performer in a segment of the awards show dubbed the Tribute To Studio One and he got things off to a very good start with a splendid rendition of Horace Andy’s timeless classic Skylarking, which was produced by the great Jamaican producer Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd who founded the Studio One studio and label in the 1960s.

Judging from the response of the audience his effort was well appreciated. The main man behind the EMEs Richard Burgess was very pleased with Timmi Burrell’s performance; “Timmi got the show off to a very fine start I must say, he is certainly poised for great things”, said Richard Burgess when asked for his thoughts about the budding artist’s performance.

Countdown Begins To The Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival

CARIBPR Wire, NEW YORK, NY, Jan. 10, 2010:  The countdown has begun to the Caribbean’s best music festival - Jamaica Jazz & Blues - which is set to wrap up for three nights on the field of the Greenfield Stadium in Trelawny, just 19 km east of its former home in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Turnkey Productions, producers of the annual festival, says plans are well under day to transform the inner field of the stadium into the phenomenal experience that is associated with Jamaica Jazz & Blues annually. Walter Elmore, executive producer of the festival and founder of Turnkey Productions, insists that fans of the main event will not have to sit in stadium seats for the festival but as at the Aqueduct at Rose Hall in Montego Bay, fans will be able to sit or stand on the field under the stars and soak in the many extraordinary performances. “All of the focus is currently on transforming the in-field of the stadium to create the intimacy and mystique that is undoubtedly Jamaica Jazz & Blues,” said Elmore. “It will not be a stadium-style performance but definitely an upfront and personal experience as our loyal fans remain our primary focus and we are dedicated to ensuring we continue to providing the unparalleled experience that has made us the number one musical event across the Caribbean.” The 2010 staging of the JAMAICA Jazz and Blues Festival will be a seven-day long celebration of The Art of Music that will see the North Coast engulfed in the awesome sights and sounds of the Turn Key Productions event from January 24-30. The event kicks off on Sunday, January 24th with Jazz in the Gardens at the Jamaica Pegasus, Kingston, featuring Roy Ayers and Tony Greene from 8-11 p.m. The line-up of the 14th staging of the annual includes top Grammy winning acts like Gladys Knight, Kenneth `Babyface` Edmonds, Billy Ocean, Erykah Badu, Third World and The Whispers. Babyface will take to the stage on Thursday, January 28th at The Greenfield Stadium in Trelawny along with The Whispers, Joss Stone, Monty Alexander and Joe Roy Jackson. On Friday, January 29th, fans can get ready for Erykah Badu, Billy Ocean, Machel Montano, Robin Banks and the Queens Project - featuring Tamia, Kelly Price and Deborah Cox. The festival wraps up on Saturday January 30th with the Empress of Soul, Gladys Knight, along with Third World, Hall & Oates, Jon Secada and Marion Hall. The annual Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival will be held from January 24-30, 2010 in Jamaica. Jamaica Jazz since its introduction in 1996 was known as the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, has attracted thousands of patrons from the USA, Europe, the Caribbean and Jamaica. Jamaica Jazz festival officials are urging all music fans in the U.S., U.K. and Canada to book last minute package to the festival now to experience the sights, sounds and magic of sunny Jamaica, West Indies. Considering the number of A-Listers that will be attending the 6th Annual EME Awards on February 04, the world awaits the fashion statements that will be made on the Red Carpet which opens up at 7PM. The Awards Ceremony itself gets underway at 8PM. The EMEs remain an invitation only event but will be aired on CVM TV, CVM Plus, Hot 102 FM and other local and international media affiliates. Founded by popular radio personality Richard ‘Richie B’ Burgess, the EME Awards was created to honor the players in the local music industry, both past and present. The EME Awards, a non-profit venture, has garnered unwavering support and popularity through the years and has attracted coverage from both the local and international media. Last year, the presence of America’s BETJ Channel provided quite a fillip for the EMEs and their repeat airings of the event has definitely added to the excitement and anticipation both here and abroad.  When quizzed as to who will fill the coveted slots for performers at the 6th Annual EME Awards, the spokesman pointed out that an announcement will be made soon but expect some huge surprises.

Kingston, Jamaica - (Jan 11, 2009) - Billboard charting Dancehall Soulstress Cherine Anderson turned up the heat in Red Hills St. Andrew last Thursday night, during an island wide cold front, to shoot the video to her hot new video You Turn Me On with Natel.  The video, directed by Kevin Lee, was shot by a complete Jamaican crew and produced by Jan’l Hastings-Robinson for Zlink Entertainment/ Dancehall Soul Productions. The set was abuzz with local media all night, eager to capture Anderson in a metallic purple swimsuit.  From one look to the next, Anderson and Natel excited the observers and many commented on the chemistry between the two young singers.

We asked Cherine about her experience recording the song with Natel and she responded, “It was really easy, he is very talented.  It was really cool to actually be able to record “You Turn Me On” with both of us in the studio together, it helped to make the song more believable.” Jumping in the frigid swimming pool a little after midnight, all the crew and assistance on set watched Anderson in awe.  Many sought cover under thick sweaters from the chilling winds, but Anderson, being the consummate professional, was all smiles and continued the shoot . With a modest request for some hot tea during breaks, the petite beauty gave a convincing performance, even joking at one point that it felt like a nice summer day on Hellshire beach. When Natel was asked about working with Anderson he responded, “It was truly a very exciting experience, one which was filled with a great vibe in a lovely atmosphere.  I’m happy and honoured to have been offered the opportunity to work with Cherine on my very first project.”  “You Turn Me On” is currently Number 17 on the Jamaica Weekly Music Countdown.  It is one of two videos that will be released for Cherine over the next three weeks.  The video for the chart topping “Shine On Jamaica” will also be released in January.
